Health Visitors

The introduction of Health Visitors in 1907 would go on to play an important role in the health of new-born babies in Rotherham.  During 1925 the five health visitors visited ninety one per cent of all new babies born in the area. A number of visits were paid to children under one year old and special attention was paid to illegitimate children.

Also under the Mental Deficiency Act, Health Visitors were authorised to attend lectures, demonstrations and visits institutions, conducted by the Central Association for Mental Welfare. Health Visits passed on skill suggestions on cleanliness and independence in dressing and feeding. During 1928 the Health Visitors attended to 159 cases at home as well as attending the clinics with the children held by the Public Health Office. 16 children with Mental Deficiency lived within the workhouse, 3 cases were there under "place of safety" 21 children received regular supervision at home and all these children were under the age of six.
